The Vatican Space Program was a band project that lasted from 2013 until 2015. The project was, since the beginning, a music hybrid as it brought together musicians from very different backgrounds: folk, pop, blues, rock, progressive rock, punk, jazz, country, and alternative rock got mixed to give way to something that, when pressured to give a label, we called pop-folk, even though it was always falling off the edges of the genre.
As any band with a history, members came and left, although the pretty stable core of the band (Ben, trombone, Juho, guitar; Jyri, guitar and vocals; myself, bass) allowed us to put together a bunch of original songs which, written by different band members, allowed us to give some continuity to the band. Finally, in 2014, after completing the lineup with Reetta (vocals) and Matt (drums), we put ourselves in the studio for a whole weekend, where we recorded almost non-stop 10 songs. The first mixes were heard by Merrimack Records, LLC, a record label that offered us a distribution deal. Result of that agreement, we released our first and only album, “A Cobble of Songs”, which brings together all those backgrounds together in one album.
After some local touring in Helsinki, a few copies sold here and there, the band went through some changes in the lineup and finally stopped existing in March of 2016. The remnants of our activities can be found in our Facebook page and our Soundcloud. Also, our album is still available in Spotify, Amazon, cdbaby and, of course, ourselves. Just get in touch if you want one and are around Helsinki!
